Turning an old Binks Crossdraft into a Semi Down Draft (SDD) with Air Make-Up!

Turning an old negatively pressurized Binks Crossdraft with Infra-Red Baking into a positively pressurized Semi Down Draft Booth with a Hot Air Make-Up Unit (AMU). This Retrofit has given the old crossdraft new life!

The old booth used to suck in so much dust from the shop that almost all of the cars coming out of the booth had to be wet-sanded & buffed. This not only wastes time but money in extra labor, materials & a slow production schedule. In the winter months the shop gets cold when the booth is in use, as all the heat is sucked out the exhaust stack. Not to mention that the doors in the shop year round are hard to open or close and some doors almost hit you when you open them. Sound familiar?

The retrofitted booth now uses fresh outside air that is pulled in by the AMU installed on the roof of the shop saving valuable space on the shop floor. It then heats that air to the desired set temperature for the spraying cycle. Something that was not possible before. It then forces the heated air into the custom plenum that was built on top of the old booth through the new filters installed on the ceiling of the old booth. This air not only pressurizes the booth but is also at a stabilized temperature for more consistent finishes. It doesn't suck the heat out of your shop. A real plus during the winter months. Then, after flowing over the car it is exhausted by the original filters and exhaust set-up that have done the same job for years.

You may ask yourself what does this all mean to me? It means that for a little more than half the price of a new booth you can have a positively pressurized semi down draft with complete control of the spraying temperature out of your old booth. But that's not all! All of our AMUs have baking capabilities. Yes that's right, you get the capability of baking with our AMUs.

So what's the bottom line?

View of doors from the inside. Old filter openings closed up with sheet metal. Note the Cane Bolts - this is because the Brixon Latches were fine when this was a negatively pressurized booth. But now that an AMU has been added it now becomes a positively pressurized booth, the Brixon Latches will not keep the doors from blowing open. that's why we added the Cane Bolts.

Custom Plenum on a Binks Crossdraft
A Plenum where none was before. We created a custom plenum on top of the old crossdraft to make it into a Semi Down Draft (SDD)
